My Christmas Present: Eviction!

After a long, drawn-out ordeal, I have finally been notified that I cannot stay in my apartment. There was much back and forth and speculation: will they allow us to stay? Won’t they? Will the rent increase beyond my means? Then, on Christmas Eve, a note from the new owner settled the issue. Out by January 31.

Frankly, at this point, I’m relieved. Waiting to hear my fate was wearing me down. At the same time, I was aware that I was overextending my newly unstable income. I would have clung to that apartment if I had been permitted, to the detriment of my savings. Once it was saddled with the stress of uncertainty, the swank, disheveled seventies bachelor pad appeal began to wane. Instead I noticed the problems: cobwebs, water stains, the perpetual puddle on my deck, the unsteady stairs… even the mighty have fallen.

I  also am glad that this uprooting has galvanized me to seek out roommates and reduce my living expenses. My preference has always been to live alone, something I have accomplished a few times regardless of the financial wisdom of it. If I’m going to continue this gunslinger lifestyle, I have to live close to the ground, which appeals to me anyhow.

On the plus side, I now have a hot chick who dotes upon me. That takes the sting off my plight in very wonderful ways. And Champ is pleased to no end.

All in all, I look forward to 2008.
